Problem #1

How can men be encouraged to talk to their doctors about their problem with frequent urination?

Boehringer-Ingelheim wanted to introduce consumers to Flomax, the first prescription medicine that is specifically designed to relieve the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (e.g., frequent urination, a sudden urgency to urinate, getting up in the middle of the night to urinate). The target audience consisted of men over the age of 50. Research showed:

  • Men were reluctant to initiate conversations with their doctors about this problem.
  • Getting up several times a night had an impact on the wife, too.
  • High blood pressure medications were often prescribed to help relieve these symptoms, but had systemic effects that could be potentially dangerous for those men who didn't have hypertension.
